Musings of a Reluctant 4th Grade Writer

My son wrote this after I told him he had an on-demand writing assignment the following day...for the school district.  He had a complete meltdown over it and my husband suggested he write down how he felt about it.

He turned it into a letter.

Dear Norfolk Public Schools,

I absolutely hate writing.

It is my worst subject and always will be.

I would very much like for on-demand writing to be stopped.

It just causes me to have so much stress.

Thank you,

My son's name

Things I've Learned So Far

Being a Mom has taught me that:

1: Children take the place pets once had in your heart.
2: Sleep is desired, but getting things done is more important.
3: You are no longer on this earth for yourself.
4: Routines are hard to establish, each day has the potential of being different from the day before.
5: Smiles and hugs are better than chocolate; they melt in your heart, not in your hands.
6: After the 6th month, you stop freaking out when things fall on the floor.
7: Pack the diaper bag as if you were going to be gone all day.
8: Don't scold your dog for being around your baby. A scared dog becomes a biting dog.
9: Babies activate the Mr. Clean in you.
10: Turn off the TV, turn up the music.

They grow up so fast

This is what I hear from so many people. Friends, neighbors, Facebook. I know it's true. It's happening right in front of me. I find myself constantly going back through Nathan's baby album looking at his newborn pictures, or all the pictures I've added to Facebook. I know I've got a lot to look forward to as he gets older. But I'm scared of losing my baby! All the moms of older children say "I don't remember mine that little." The first time I heard someone say that, I was determined that I would not forget. I set on a mission have my camera glued to my hand and not care about a dirty house or kitchen sink, just as long as I got to stare into Nathan's innocent baby face. "Basking in Nathanness," as my husband calls it :) Now he's older and not very content with staring back up at me, or even being held for a long period of time (unless he's sleeping). Time for another one? (JK) It's too bad babies are more like kittens and less like turtles or elephants. Give me a perpetual baby! I don't mind all the diaper changes. I don't. Really!!
